Walter “Wally” Brewers was born on November 9, 1931, on the home farm east of Minneota, the fifth child of Blanche (Rogge) and Louis Brewers. He attended country school for three years, moved on to Saint Eloi in Ghent, and graduated from Minneota High School. He joined the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict as a radio man aboard the troop carrier USS Menifee. He received an honorable discharge and returned home to farm. Wally met his wife to be, Georgia Christensen (who he renamed “Dolly”), at a wedding dance at the Blue Moon ballroom. Oh, could he dance. They were married on November 12, 1955, and were so fortunate to have 70 1/2 years together.
Wally’s faith was an extremely important part of his life, and he tried very hard to live by it. His complete joy was being the father of four children, three boys and one girl: Doug (Karen), Kris Nuytten (Jeff), Paul (Anmarie), and Mark (Kellie). In addition, he had 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Wally farmed for a few years, was a door to door milk man for a short time, and finally purchased a bulk oil business that he ran for 25 years. During his retirement he played a lot of golf, once making a hole in one on the sixth hole at Marshall Golf Club. He also served on the golf course board of directors.
Some special times for Wally included shaking John F. Kennedy’s hand, sharing an elevator ride with his wife and Muhammad Ali (where he got his autograph and Ali’s famous quote “float like a butterfly, sting like a bee”), attending in person all four Viking Super Bowl games and both Minnesota Gopher Rose Bowl games, enjoying their cottage on Lake Shetek for 20 years, and being a snowbird in Sun City, Arizona for 20 years.
Wally was a retired volunteer fireman, a member of the Knights of Columbus, a charter lifetime member of the VFW, and was so proud of his 73 years as a member of the American Legion. He and his friends had happy hour at the Gambler and created a large wooden plaque stating “the round table of wisdom and knowledge,” which included all their names.
He died on Monday, May 18, 2026, at the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD, with many of his precious family by his side. He is now at peace.
