Thomas Michael Greenfield

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Horvath Remembrance Center in Tracy, MN, on Thursday, September 25, 2025. Visitation will be from    1:00–2:00 p.m., followed by a service at 2:00 p.m., with a luncheon to follow. Family burial will take place at a later date.

Thomas (Tom) Michael Greenfield February 21, 1953 – September 4, 2025 • Age 72 • Garvin, MN

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Thomas (Tom) Michael Greenfield, who died suddenly on September 4, 2025, following a recent decline in health, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.

Tom was born on February 21, 1953, in Tracy, MN, to Norman and Catherine (Ford) Greenfield. He attended school in Balaton, MN, through the 10th grade before transferring to Tracy High School, where he graduated with the Class of 1972.

After graduation, Tom began working at PPG in Tracy, later joining the City of Tracy as a street maintenance worker in 1975. He remained in that role until retiring in 2012 due to health reasons. Tom also proudly served as firefighter badge #1111 with the Tracy Fire Department for 20 years.

On January 4, 1975, Tom married his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Debra Buzzell. Together, they built a life in Tracy, MN, where they raised their family. In 2015, Tom and Deb moved to Garvin, MN, to be closer to their children and grandchildren.

Tom’s greatest joy was found in his family, especially his grandchildren, who will forever remember him saying, “Get your brains in gear.” He was a devoted husband, loving father, and a proud grandfather and great-grandfather.

An avid outdoorsman, Tom spent his life hunting, trapping, and fishing, passions he shared with his kids and grandkids. In retirement, he devoted himself to conservation efforts and could often be seen driving out to feed pheasants, ensuring that future generations would experience the same wildlife he cherished.

Though he never had much, Tom gave everything he could to his family, always making sure none of them went without. His quick wit, generous spirit, and unconditional love will live on in their hearts forever.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Norman and Catherine (Ford) Greenfield; his in-laws, Donald and Patricia (Reineke) Buzzell; and nephews Timothy Smith and Gary (Jeb) Greenfield.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 50 years, Debra of Garvin, MN; his daughters Kimberly (Gregory) Seaton of Garvin, MN, and Kandi Greenfield of Garvin, MN; his grandchildren Taylor (Amanda) Varpness of Canby, MN; Tristan (Abigail) Varpness of Glenville, MN; Tucker Varpness and special friend Allie Sveen of Rochester, MN; Zachary Seaton and special friend Molli Lundgaard of Garvin, MN; Emmanuel Aguinaga of Fairmont, MN; and his cherished great-grandchildren Wyatt, Avery, Emma, Piper, and Truett Varpness.

He is also survived by siblings: Norman (Pam) Greenfield of Balaton, MN; Gary Greenfield of Tracy, MN; Douglas Greenfield of Tracy, MN; Steven (Barb) Greenfield of Montevideo, MN; David (Laura) Greenfield of Mason City, IA; Dianne (Frank) Smith of Tracy, MN; Donna Greenfield of Tracy, MN; and Lori (Todd) Klosterbuer of Rock Rapids, IA. He will be deeply missed by many nieces, nephews, and special friends.

Tom’s love for family and giving spirit will live on in the hearts of those who love him. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the dedicated team of caregivers at Avera McKennan Hospital and the Avera Heart Hospital.
