The funeral service for Sylvia Johnson, 93, of Balaton, will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 2, 2017, at the Skandia Free Church in Balaton. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at church. Interment will follow the service at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Balaton.
Sylvia Mae Braband was born on September 22, 1924, to August and Grace (DeBoer) Braband in LeMars, Iowa. She moved with her family to Minnesota in 1940. Sylvia attended Balaton High School and graduated in 1942. After high school, she worked in Minneapolis in a dental office and waitressed at Daytons.
Sylvia graduated from Moody Bible Institute, Chicago, IL; Whitworth College and Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing, Spokane, WA; Columbia University School of Physical Therapy, New York City, NY.
She worked with the National Board of Missions of the Presbyterian Church in Ganado, AR, and Frenchburg, KY. Sylvia was a nursing instructor for various departments and various periods in Spokane, WA, Bridgeport, CT, and St. Paul MN.
Sylvia moved back to Marshall to work at Louis Weiner Memorial Hospital in the Physical Therapy Department. She married Elmer Johnson in Marshall, MN, on November 10, 1974. They resided in Balaton and moved into the assisted living. Elmer passed away in 2009 and in December of 2010 she moved into the Balaton Nursing Home.
Sylvia died on Tuesday, November 28, 2017, at the Colonial Manor in Balaton. She is survived by her sister Lou (Bob) Galbraith, sister-in-law Mable Braband and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer, parents, four brothers and seven sisters; she was the 10th child of 13.
