Bob was born on February 13, 1933, in Rochester, MN to Bernice and Alois Aufenthie. He was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith. His early life was spent in Redwood Falls, graduating from Redwood Falls High School in 1951. He graduated from St. John’s University in 1955. He served in the U.S. Army in Korea serving in the United Nations Command Headquarters from 1956-58.

On August 2, 1958, he married Shirley Menk at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Redwood Falls. After teaching and coaching at Morton High School he came to Marshall in 1960. He continued to coach and teach at Central Catholic High School for five years. In 1965 he started his thirty-year career with State Farm Insurance Companies in Marshall. God called his beloved wife Shirley in 1995. He also retired from State Farm that year.

On January 2, 2008, Bob married Ramona Nagel from Glencoe. Both enjoyed their travels to many parts of the world and had great respect for each other’s space.

Bob was active in the Marshall community over the years. He was active at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, a member of the Resurrection Choir, served as a Eucharistic Minister and past member of the parish council. He was a member of the board of directors on the SMSU Foundation for nearly 28 years. He volunteered with the “Meals On Wheels” program. He was most proud to serve on the first board of the YMCA, serving as its chairman the first six years. He organized the United Way of Marshall and he was a member of the Marshall Rotary Club from 1965 – 2023.

He loved to go to St. John’s University to attend many functions, but mainly to watch the Johnnies play football. He had played on John Gagliardi’s first championship team in 1953. Since his retirement, he has enjoyed doing volunteer work in Marshall.

Bob was an avid Vikings fan, he never missed a game. Camp Kawinogans held a special place in his heart and he often shared the camaraderie of a Canadian fishing trip with his friends and family.

Bob died on February 10, 2024, at Avera Morningside Heights in Marshall.

The family would like to thank the staff at Morningside Heights for their love and support during his stay.

Memorials are preferred to Holy Redeemer Foundations, Avera Foundation, YMCA, or SMSU Foundation. Bob tried to follow the Benedictine Rule of Prayer and Work. He fought the good fight and finished the race. He kept the faith. He was fully aware that one of the most beautiful and frightening qualities of our eternity is the knowledge that we surely cooperated in creating it for ourselves.

Blessed be his memory.
