Melvin A. Schmalz age 90 of Westbrook, MN died Tuesday, February 5, 2008 at the Good Samaritan Center in Westbrook. Services will be 10:30 AM Monday, February 11, 2008 at the Grace Lutheran Church in Westbrook. Visitation will be from 5:00 until 7:00 PM Sunday, February 10, 2008 at the Almlie Funeral Home in Westbrook with a prayer service at 7:00 PM. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Interment will be at the Rosehill Cemetery in rural Westbrook.
Melvin Awalt Schmalz was born May 30, 1917 to Hugo and Emma (Spielman) Schmalz in Westrook Township, Cottonwood County. He was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith and attended Westbrook Public School. Melvin lived in Westbrook until 1933 when he moved to a farm in the Rosehill Township.
On October 27, 1939 Melvin married Elizabeth Schmit at a church in Pierre, South Dakota. He continued to farm in Rosehill Township for 26 years until moving into Westbrook in 1965. Melvin then went to work for Toro in Windom, MN until his retirement in 1983.
Melvin was a life long member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Westbrook. While employed at Toro, Melvin was also a shop committee member of Local 1956 union for 10 years. Melvin enjoyed fishing, woodworking, being a handyman for friends and relatives, vegetable gardening, playing cards, and spending time with his grandchildren and other family.
On March 29, 2007 Melvin became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in Westbrook where he died on Tuesday, February 5, 2008 at the age of 90.
Melvin is survived by his two sons, Steven (Linda) Schmalz of Westbrook, MN, and Reinold (Diane) Schmalz of Palatine, IL; one daughter, Delien (Ronald) Worden of Westbrook, MN; four sisters, Lucyle Tabbert of Adrian, MN, Opal Parker of Westbrook, MN, Mavin Bratt of Florida and Joyce Newman of Rochester, MN; eight grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and cousins.
His parents, wife, Elizabeth, two infant children, and one sister, Mabel Engen preceded him in death.
