Mass of Christian Burial for Melvin Gilbert “Mike” Michelson, 97, of Marshall, will be Tuesday, September 5, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Cottonwood. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. before the service at the church. Interment, with Military Honors provided by the Cottonwood American Legion Post 503, will follow the service at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.

Melvin Michelson was born on Wednesday, January 13, 1926, in Lucas Township, Cottonwood, MN, to Ludwig and Lenora (Rewerts) Michalson. He grew up and graduated from Cottonwood school. Melvin joined the United States Navy on January 12, 1944 and was honorably discharged as Yeoman Third Class.

Melvin, affectionately known as Mike by family and friends, passed away on Thursday, August 31, 2023, at his home at Boulder Estates in Marshall at the age of 97 years, 7 months, 18 days. He is survived by his seven children Dennis and Jan Michelson, Mark Michelson and Joseph Saavedra, Chuck and Judy Michelson, Jackie and Jan Zimmerman, Lynette Dickson, Jeff and Michelle Michelson, and Steve and Julie Michelson; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Mike was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lou, and his parents.

Mike and Mary Lou were married on July 21, 1948, in Marshall and were married for 74 years. The couple made their home and raised their family in Cottonwood. Mike was a truck driver for Johnson Trucking, McLaughlin and Schulz, and the Cottonwood fertilizer plant. Mike and Mary Lou were Charter Members of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Cottonwood. Mike and Mary Lou took many trips with family and friends. Mike had a passion for sports and was a pitcher for the Cottonwood Cardinals. He enjoyed bowling, hunting and fishing, and loved playing cards.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Cottonwood in Mike’s name.
