Mary died peacefully on Sunday, February 22, 2015 at Morningside Heights Care Center in Marshall.
Mary Margaret Hastings was born June 27, 1914 in Hosmer, SD to Peter and Margaret Mary (Dekker) Mosch. Her family moved around quite a bit while they were growing up, and ended up living on a farm near Ghent before settling on a farm near Marshall. Mary attended a country school 3 miles from home until 8th grade, when she started working at the Marshall Hotel. On November 17, 1936, Mary married her husband, Leonard Hastings and lived on Park Street in a one room trailer. Money was very limited and hard for the family to have much of anything, so the family did a lot of fishing and spent time with relatives. Over the years, and in a house built by Leonard, Mary loved the modern changes to things, such as washers, dryers, TVâs, cars, phones and having more room in the house. After Leonard passed away, Mary lived at Hill Street, Boulder Estates and finally at the Morningside Care Center. Mary truly loved her family and lived for her grandchildren. She attended Mass as often as she could and prayed the rosary every day.
She is survived by her five children Darlene (John) McKay of Brentwood, CA, Wayne (Myrene) Hastings of Alexandria, MN, Gordon Hastings of Boise, ID, Carolyn Polfliet and her fiancé, Dennis Wild of Marshall, and Patrick Hastings and his fiancé, Mary Jo OâConnor of Racine, WI; 17 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Leonard; brothers, Peter, John, Nick, Frank, Martin, and Jack Mosch; sisters, Ann Larson and Andita Mosch and 3 grandchildren.
A special thanks for all the wonderful care to the nurses of Avera Morningside Care Center from her family for allowing Mary to pass away peacefully and beautiful. Blessed be her memory.
