Marlin Dean Meyer

The funeral service for Marlin Meyer, 88, of Tracy, will be at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 16, 2017, at the Tracy Alliance Church. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 6:30 p.m. at the Life Remembrance Center of Tracy. Visitation will continue from 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. Thursday at the church. Interment will follow the service at the Tracy City Cemetery. Marlin Dean Meyer was born on September 1, 1929, in Alta, IA, to Herbert and Elsie (Molgaard) Meyer. He graduated from Tracy High School in 1946. Marlin then attended two years of Junior College in Tracy and one year at the University of Minnesota. On November 24, 1950, Marlin was united in marriage to Marlene Starnes in Tracy. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951 – 1952. After his discharge, Marlin worked for one year in Austin. In 1952, he moved back to Tracy and began employment as a teller and later was a loan officer at the Tracy Bank where he worked for 30 years. He later took a job working for the FHA in the 1980s. Marlin had several hobbies. He built most of his home in 1955 and made several pieces of furniture out of lumber from some of the old walnut trees from Walnut Grove. He became an avid photographer taking mostly scenic photos and was the family photographer: never leaving home without his camera. Marlin and Marlene started camping and fishing in 1959 with their young girls. They pulled a small travel trailer for about 35 years and visited 31 National Parks and Monuments in most of the states. In 1978, with the urging of his family, he decided to enlarge some of his favorite slides, matted and framed them, and went to a local Art Show, which he continued to do throughout the Midwest for the next 16 years. After his retirement, the couple spent 20 winters in Texas where they took up bird watching which gave him a great opportunity to photograph birds. He also enjoyed fishing in the summer – going up north to a small lake where the family had a great time. Family birthdays were extra special with his homemade ice cream. He was proud of the fact that he gave 20 gallons of blood throughout the years. Marlin died on Sunday, November 12, 2017, at the Prairie View Senior Living Center in Tracy. He is survived by his wife, Marlene, of Tracy, daughters Nancy (and Skip) Grilz of Shoreview and Carol (and Rick) Ziemke of Walnut Grove, six grandchildren: Landon (and Karen) Ziemke of New Hope, Ben Ziemke of Eugene, OR, Noelle and Holly Ziemke of Walnut Grove, Dan Grilz of Centerville and Jon (and Jamie) Grilz of Maple Grove, seven great-grandchildren Micah, Asher, Estella, Truett and Clara Ziemke, Alex and Anna Grilz, sisters Elaine (and Charlie) Asman of Slayton, Janet (and Vince) Lanners of San Tan, AZ, sister-in-law Ruth Meyer of Alice, TX, and brothers-in-law David (and Sonja) Starnes of Currie, Darrel (and Marcia) Starnes of Minnetonka and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, nephew Ricky Starnes, brother Clayton, and three brothers-in-law.
