Lloyd died peacefully on Monday, June 13, at the Prairie Home Hospice Lockwood House with family by his side.
Lloyd was born on August 29, 1936, in Marshall, MN, to John and Frances (Dobias) Welu. He attended Milroy School and graduated in 1954. He enlisted in the Minnesota National Guard and served his country with pride. On June 28, 1960, he was united in marriage to Helen Coudron. They lived on the family farm northeast of Milroy where they raised their children. Lloyd was a lifelong member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Milroy where he received the sacraments.
Farming was Lloyd’s passion. He took pride in working hard, carefully tending to his livestock and crops. He was a dairy farmer for many years. He farmed with others all his life; first working with his father and helping neighbors. Later, he farmed with this brother Howard. In the winters, he would shell corn. When his sons were old enough, they helped him farm and, later in life, it was Lloyd helping his sons and grandsons. He continued to get up at 5:30 a.m. to tend to the cows until age 82 when his health forced him to retire.
Lloyd was a humble man, providing for others over himself. He worked with perseverance and dedication – teaching his children by example.
Although Lloyd was a quiet man, he had a silly streak that brought laughter to many. He enjoyed taking his family fishing, playing 500 and attending Milroy baseball games. During his later years, Lloyd received much joy when his great-grandchildren came to visit.
Lloyd is survived by his wife, Helen; children Mike (Cindy) Welu, Melvin (Beverly) Welu of Milroy, Pauline (Todd) Vogl of Marshall, John (Theresa) Welu of Milroy, and Jolene (Chris) Hjelmberg of Savage. Also survived by grandchildren Cody and Jenny (Justin) Welu, Amy (Tanner) Michelson, Jacob and Adam Welu, Katie (Justin) Prokosch, Megan (Alex) Rohlik, Sarah Vogl, Brady (Jenna) Welu, Taylor (Nick) Mueller, Samantha (Jon) Tauer, Elijah (Emily) Welu, Kendrick, Emily, and Carter Hjelmberg; great-grandchildren Leo, Mathias, Isidore, Augustine, and Joseph Prokosch, Elise, Oliver and Ada Michelson, Liam Welu, Madison Tauer, Magnolia and baby Mueller, Micah and Joanna Rohlik.
He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings Vincent Welu, Lorraine Holmberg, Lucille Dolan, Evelyn Dolan, Leanore Rohlik, Howard Welu, Donna Engel and other family members.
