The funeral service for Leroy “Red” Cable, 98, of Luverne, will be Saturday, June 15, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at the Horvath Remembrance Center in Marshall. Military honors will take place outside the remembrance center following the service. A private family interment will take place at a later date.
He was born on December 10, 1925, in Preble, Indiana. After graduating from Kirkland High School, Indiana in April of 1943 he was married to Mary Ellen Drayer, his beloved wife, and they were married 75 years until Mary Ellen’s death on November 10, 2018.
Red was drafted into the Army and entered the service on September 21, 1944. He served in the Philippines as a Sergeant on a Howitzer until the war ended and he was stationed in Japan until his honorable discharge on October 27, 1946.
He attended Ball State Teachers College in Muncie, Indiana, and graduated on August 17, 1951, having received a Bachelor of Science in Education in mathematics, physics, and physical education. He was employed as a math teacher and coach at Adam Central Public School in Indiana. Red also taught and coached at Angola Public School and Highland Public School in Indiana. He enjoyed teaching, working with youth, and coaching basketball, baseball, and football until his retirement.
Red and Mary Ellen moved to Florida in the Daytona Beach area, after Red retired, and lived in Florida for over 30 years. In 2015 they moved to the St. Louis area to be near their son, daughter-in-law, and family. After Mary Ellen’s death in November of 2018, he moved to Marshall, Minnesota to live with his son and daughter-in-law until Red was able to become a resident at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Luverne, Minnesota. He resided at the Minnesota Veterans Home for over 4 years until his death on May 10, 2024.
Red enjoyed playing pinochle throughout his life. He also enjoyed putting puzzles together. Red was a Chicago Cub fan and the first place he took Mary Ellen after his discharge from the Army and arrival in Chicago was Wrigley Field.
Red and Mary Ellen were active in the First United Methodist Church in Port Orange, Florida. Red was also active in the Lions Club wherever he lived.
Red treasured his time with Mary Ellen and family even though the family lived throughout the United States. Red had four children: Leroy, Steven, Michael, and Beth.
Red was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather and is survived by his son, Michael (Nadine) Cable of Marshall, MN; daughter Beth (Joe) Pinkston of Vincennes, IN; grandchildren, Christy Cable of South Daytona Beach, FL; Benjamin Cable of Florham Park, NJ; Lorraine Cable of Greenfield, IN; Leroy (Kayla) Cable of Fort Wayne, IN; Alan (Raquel) Kunkel of Tampa, FL; Matthew (Renee) Goff of Sheridan, IN; Nick (Heather) Goff of Lawrenceville, IL; Blake (Shelley) Cable of Temecula, CA; Bryce (Stacey) Cable of Hawley, MN; Brennan Cable of Fargo, ND, 19 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. He was preceded in death by Mary Ellen, Leroy Cable, Steven Cable, and daughter-in-law, Carol Cable.
