John (Jack) C. Garrett

A memorial service for John Garrett, 86, of Tracy, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 3, 2015, at Tracy Lutheran Church. Military honors provided by U.S. American Legion Post 173 of Tracy. Almlie-Horvath Funeral Service is handling arrangements. John “Jack” C. Garrett was born November 21, 1928 to John and Estelle (Colwell) in Hunter, ND. He was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith. He attended schools in Minnesota, graduating from Moorhead High School in 1946. John then attended Moorhead State University for one year and then transferred to North Dakota State University for two years, where he played basketball, football and was on the track team. He then enlisted into the National Guard and was called into active duty in January of 1951. John served in Korea and was honorably discharged in September of 1952, while in the Army he attained the rank of a Master Sargent and served in an Engineering Corp.. After serving he went back to North Dakota State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. While at NDSU he was drafted by the Syracuse Nationals basketball team of the ABA. On December 28, 1949, John was united in marriage to Mavis Gunderson in Moorhead, MN. They made their home in Fort Rucker, AL, during his enlistment and then made their home in Fargo, ND, while attending NDSU. Following his graduation from college, John taught school in Cottonwood, MN, where he also was the head basketball coach for three years. In 1957 they moved to Tracy MN, where he taught school and coached several sports over the next twenty eight years, retiring in 1985. John was a member of the Tracy Kiwanis, American legion, V.F.W and ATO Fraternity and enjoyed Duck, Pheasant and Deer hunting, Water sports, wood working, drafting, and was an artist by hobby, using hand-carving and printing. On Tuesday, July 14, 2015, John passed away at the Prairie View Senior Living Center in Tracy, Minnesota at the age of 86. John is survived by his wife, Mavis of Tracy, MN; two sons; Marcus (Nancy) Garrett of Neptune Beach, FL, and Mykl (Lisa) Garrett of Phoenix, AZ; grandchildren; Jessica (Christopher) Murdock, Patrick (Alexandria) Garrett, Johnathan (Laryn) Garrett, and Lindsey Garrett, Lauren(Josh) Rabb, Brooklyn (Tres) Coker and Tatum Davis; five great grandchildren; Benjamin, Jack, Christian, Jared and Cole. John was preceded in death by his parents and one sister Geraldine. Blessed be his memory.
