Joan Beverly Haugen

Mass of Christian Burial for Joan Haugen, 90, of Marshall, will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service, 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. at the church. Interment will follow the service at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Marshall.

Joan Beverly (Flanagan) Haugen was born on August 10, 1936, in Henry, SD, to Francis and Kathryn (Ralph) Flanagan. She grew up in Henry and graduated from Henry High School. On the Monday after graduation, Joan started work at the Midland National Life Insurance Company in Watertown, SD. On December 26, 1955, she was united in marriage to Gerald Haugen. The couple lived in Watertown, later Mitchell, SD, before moving to Marshall in 1967. After Gerald’s death, Joan worked at a variety of jobs. She worked as a Para-Professional for the Marshall Public Schools for many years.

Joan enjoyed dancing and playing cards. She was very social and enjoyed time spent with her sewing group, bridge group and coffee group. She especially enjoyed time with her family: her kids, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Joan died peacefully, under hospice care, at her residence in Marshall on Wednesday, August 12, 2026. She is survived by her daughter Karen (Ron) Hoflock of Marshall, daughter Diane VanOverbeke of Kuna, ID, daughter Deb (Brian) Schroeder of Marshall, son John Haugen of Sioux Falls, SD, son Kevin Haugen of Oak Point, TX, son Tom Haugen (and Gretchen Dovre-Wellendorf) of Burnsville, 11 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, sisters-in-law Donna Flanagan, Beverly Haugen, Gloria York, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Gerald, son Daniel, son-in-law George VanOverbeke, four brothers and four sisters.
