Marshall

Mass of Christian Burial for James “Jim” Hubley, 74, of Marshall, will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 28, 2023, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Marshall.  Visitation will take place from 9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. at the church.  Interment with military honors will take place at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery at a later date.

James Arthur Hubley was born on November 19, 1948, to John and Lois (Waldstein) Hubley in Fairmont, MN.  He attended St. John Vianney Catholic School and graduated from Fairmont High School in 1966.  After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Washington D.C., Berlin, Germany, and Vietnam.  Jim particularly loved the people of Vietnam and returned there to visit twice after his discharge from the Army.

After returning home from his service, Jim attended Southwest State University in Marshall and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Anthropology.  He married Barbara Bot in 1975.  The couple moved to Mankato where Jim attended MSU and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Community Education.  They moved to Fairmont where Jim worked as Circulation Manager of the Fairmont Sentinel.  Next they moved to Marshall where Jim sold insurance for American Family.  He attended SDSU in Brookings and received an MFA in English and started teaching English as an adjunct faculty member at SMSU.  Later, Jim began working as the Veteran’s Service Officer for Lyon County.  He loved working with veterans and it seemed the job was meant for him.  He also drove school bus for many years and cherished that job as well as the many students who were his riders.

Jim and Barb were blessed with three children:  Daniel, Adam and Jessica who were the light of their lives.  When two grandchildren came into the picture, they were very special and loved very much.

Jim had many health challenges throughout the years but tried not to let those setbacks bring him down.  He loved reading, camping, music, travelling, attending plays and sporting events, visiting the children and playing with his beloved dog “Daisy Mae”.  He was a member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, the group Pax Christi, Little Portion Secular Franciscan Order, Veterans for Peace and many others.  He was an advocate for peace his entire life.

Jim died on Monday, February 20, 2023, at the Avera Marshall Regional Medical Center in Marshall, after a short illness.  He had recently been living at Avera Morningside Heights.

He is survived by his wife, Barb, of Marshall, children Daniel (Tricia) Hubley of Savage, Adam (Kayla) Hubley of Apple Valley, Jessica Hubley (Ryan VanSomeren) of Milaca; grandchildren Cole Hubley and William Hubley; siblings John (Peggy) Hubley of Jeffers, Charles Hubley (Carol Brekke) of Fairmont and Kathryn Lake of Tucson, AZ, many cousins, nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his mother Lois and father John, infant sister Margaret, in-laws William and Kathleen Bot and many aunts, uncles and other relatives.
