After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Washington D.C., Berlin, Germany, and Vietnam. Jim particularly loved the people of Vietnam and returned there to visit twice after his discharge from the Army.
After returning home from his service, Jim attended Southwest State University in Marshall and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Anthropology. He married Barbara Bot in 1975. The couple moved to Mankato where Jim attended MSU and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Community Education. They moved to Fairmont where Jim worked as Circulation Manager of the Fairmont Sentinel. Next they moved to Marshall where Jim sold insurance for American Family. Jim and Barb were blessed with three children: Daniel, Adam and Jessica who were the light of their lives. When two grandchildren came into the picture, they were very special and loved very much.
Jim had many health challenges throughout the years but tried not to let those setbacks bring him down. He loved reading, camping, music, travelling, attending plays and sporting events, visiting the children and playing with his beloved dog “Daisy Mae”. He was a member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, the group Pax Christi, Little Portion Secular Franciscan Order, Veterans for Peace and many others. He was an advocate for peace his entire life.
