Harriet Elizabeth Doom

Mass of Christian Burial for Harriet Doom, 94, of Marshall, formerly of Cottonwood, will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 5, 2023, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Cottonwood.  Visitation will be Wednesday, January 4, from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. with a CCW Rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a Parish Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. at the Horvath Remembrance Center in Marshall.  Visitation will continue on Thursday from 8:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. at the remembrance center.  Interment will follow the service at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Cottonwood.  A recording of the service will be available at www.horvathfuneralservice.com.

Harriet Elizabeth (DeBruyckere) Doom was born on June 23, 1928, in Ghent, MN, to Angela (Pille) and Matthew DeBruyckere.  She grew up and attended country school.  On February 16, 1949, she was united in marriage to Remi Doom at St. Eloi Catholic Church in Ghent.  From this union, six children were born.  The couple farmed and raised their family west of Cottonwood until retiring in 1985.  Then they moved to Cottonwood near the golf course.  Harriet and Remi were Charter Members of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Cottonwood where Harriet was very active.  She was a great farm wife, devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.  Family was very important to her.  Harriet was a “Bread Queen.”  She made many loaves of homemade bread weekly.  She sewed, crocheted many doilies and lots of afghans.  Harriet was a great gardener and cook. 

In 2015, she moved to Boulder Estates in Marshall where she made even more friends.  She especially enjoyed winning at cards, Bingo and Pokino.  In October, 2022, Harriet moved to the McLaughlin Hospice House where she died on December 28, 2022, surrounded by family.

She is survived by her children Monica (and Donald) Senden of Marshall, Bernie (and Duane) Louwagie of Marshall, Joyce Doom of Marshall, Jenny (and Ralph) Dieken of Marshall, Steven (and Brenda) Doom of Cottonwood; 16 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; brother Robert (and Chris) DeBruyckere of Wisconsin and sister-in-law Donata DeBruyckere; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Remi, daughter Colleen, her parents, twin grandsons, one sister, two brothers and her in-laws. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Prairie Home Hospice of Marshall or St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Cottonwood in Harriet’s memory.
