Gary Aloysius Deutz was born December 30, 1935, in Marshall, Minnesota, to Frank and Augusta (Sarazyn) Deutz, and died peacefully surrounded by his family on Thursday, December 17, 2020, after suffering from dementia. He grew up on the family farm by Marshall with his parents and 12 siblings, attended grade school at St. Joseph’s Academy and graduated from Marshall High School in 1953 and lived in the Marshall area throughout his life. Gary served his country in the U.S. Army and was a member of the American Legion Post No. 113. After an honorable discharge, Gary married Armella Lutterman May 17, 1958, and were blessed with six children. Gary had a strong faith in the Lord. He was a life-long member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, receiving all sacraments there, and serving on the Parish Council. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Gary and Armella enjoyed their daily walks to the river/pasture reflecting on life. Gary did a variety of jobs around the Marshall area before his farming career started including milk delivery for Marshall Dairy, working at Lyon County Co-op, installing TV antennas, driving a route for Old Home Bakery, working as a supervisor at Kelco. In 1963 he started his farming career when he bought the farm where he and Armella resided until late 2019. A hard day’s labor farming, love of the land, and watching his planted seeds grow were his joy. Gary sold Garst seed corn over the years. He took great care of his John Deere farm equipment. It manifested when he would shine his tractors and enter them in the annual Lyon County Tractor Pulls or give tours of equipment in his machine shed to city folk visiting the farm. He loved gathering his family together for activities, whether it be for play or work. Gary especially liked to tease and tell stories to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also enjoyed and took great pride following and attending their activities and events. The grandsons looked forward each year to attending Farmfest with grandpa in the “green machine.” Social person that he was, Gary enjoyed going with Armella to dances and casinos visiting with those he knew and also meeting new friends. Gary enjoyed playing cards, whether it was with his brothers over a Grain Belt beer, family members, or new acquaintances at the casino. Sundays were a time to worship the Lord and spend time with family. Visiting his parents after Mass in the morning and visiting with his in-laws in the afternoon were a weekly Sunday ritual for the family. Gary will be dearly missed by his wife of 62 years, Armella, of Marshall; daughter Jolene (Dick) Carrow, grandchildren Maria, Alissa, Andrea and Jacob; son Rick (Deb) Deutz, grandchildren Rachel, Nathan, David, Austin, Bridget and Sarah; daughter Kathy Deutz, grandchildren Jadeen and Travis; daughter Colleen (Bernard) Louwagie; daughter Jackie (Jim) Tauer, grandchildren Jonathan, Samantha, Christina and Angela; son Mike (Jill) Deutz, grandchildren Jesse, Alyssa, Jenessa and Devan; 33 great-grandchildren and two more on the way. He is also survived by siblings DeAnna Poor of Florida, Bill (Becky) Deutz of Marshall, Laura (Dick) Duthoy of Maryland, Dan (Katie) Deutz of Lake Benton, and Paul (Fran) Deutz of Marshall; in-laws Marlys Deutz, Clarence Blair, Alice Deutz, Rosie Deutz, Curt Porter; Lutterman in-laws Alfred Lutterman, Betty Lutterman, and Marion (and Arden) Swan; and countless nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; great-grandson Luke Deutz; siblings Ramona (Bob) Smith, John Deutz, Audrey Blair, Ted Deutz, Jim Deutz (Mary Bump), Pat Deutz, and Peggy Porter; and in-laws Ed Lutterman, Teresa Johnson, Raymond Lutterman, Rosella Dubbledee/Lanoue, Reta Medrud, Margaret Kelly, Del Lutterman, Annie Lutterman, and Willard Lutterman. Memorials are preferred to Holy Redeemer School.
