Dwayne (Doc) J. Tegels

Dr. Dwayne J. “Doc” Tegels was born August 9, 1934 to Joseph and Ida (Van Moer) Tegels in Lyon Township. Dwayne was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church. Dwayne attended grades 1-8 at St. Josephs Academy and graduated in 1952 from Marshall High School. Dwayne graduated from Northwestern College of Chiropractic in 1958. Dwayne enlisted in the United States Army on January 17, 1955 through January 17, 1957, and proudly served his country stationed in Fulda, Germany. He earned rank of Sgt. 1st Class and was a medic. On March 2, 1957, Dwayne was united in Holy Matrimony to his childhood sweetheart Marilyn Spartz at Holy Redeemer Church in Marshall. This union was blessed with a daughter Staci Lynn born on October 1, 1960 and a granddaughter Kelleigh Marie on May 7, 1984. Dwayne treasured time with his family and his granddaughter, Kelleigh, was the light of his life. Dwayne was inducted into the Knights of Columbus 4th Degree Hall of Fame on April 20, 1991, in Rochester, MN. Dwayne joined the Knights of Columbus in 1953 and held offices of Deputy Grand Knight and Grand Knight. Dwayne was on the State Catholic Activities Committee, State Charities Commission, and District Deputy of District 23. Dwayne was on the charitable gambling committee of Holy Redeemer Council 1621. Dr. Tegels joined the 4th Degree in 1967 and served as Scribe, Faithful Captain and Faithful Navigator. Dwayne was the Controller of 4th Degree and Financial Secretary of the 3rd Degree through the present time. Dr. Tegels was instrumental in obtaining a Charter for the 4th Degree in 1967 and later obtaining the General Assembly Charter. In addition to the many activities in the Knights of Columbus her has been active in Community Chest, served as Public Health Officer, served on AFS program and instructed and served on a Scoliosis spinal check for grade school children. After graduation from Northwestern College of Chiropractic, Dr. Tegels was a Chiropractor in Windom in 1958. Dwayne moved to Marshall, MN and opened his Chiropractic office in 1959 and continued to treat patients until his passing. Dr. Tegels loved his Chiropractic patients and work. Dwayne served as District President of Southwest Chiropractic in 1972. Dwayne spent 28 summers at his lake home on Green Lake in Spicer, MN, making many lifelong friends while relaxing and driving his “John Deere” lawn mower. Dwayne was an avid outdoorsman, enjoyed salmon fishing in Sitka, Alaska, fly-in fishing trips to Canada, deer, pheasant, duck, goose, and moose hunting. Dwayne shot the largest moose to come out of Canada. Dwayne was a member of the Marshall Chamber of Commerce, Marshall Minute Men, Marshall Jaycees, and Marshall Lions. On July 7, 2009, Dwayne joined his loving Saviour. He passed away at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis. Dr. Tegels is survived by his loving wife Marilyn, daughter Staci (Les) Tegels Nelson of Willmar, granddaughter Kelleigh (Brad) Tegels Nelson Zielinski of St. Paul, step-grandsons Justin (Lindsay) Nelson of St. Louis Park and Brett Nelson of Minneapolis, his sisters Joyce (Ed) of Mount Prospect, IL and Jean Gruhot of Marshall. Dwayne was preceded in death by his parents.
