Duane Alexander Sumerfelt

d. June 25, 2019

Duane Alexander Sumerfelt, 66, began his eternal rest Tuesday, June 25th, 2019 at home following a nearly three year long battle against MDS. Born and raised in Marshall, the son of Bernard and Sophie (Gruhot) Sumerfelt, he was a lifelong and well-known member of the community. Duane, born July 8, 1952, was the third of five brothers. Duane enjoyed life in small town Minnesota and graduated from Marshall Senior High School in 1970. He excelled in FFA and won a state championship in the forestry division. In lieu of a career in the wilderness, he attended technical school for auto body repair to pursue a lifetime love of cars. Upon completion of his education, Duane began what would become his career, working for local construction contractors, ultimately leading to a partnership with Earl Lindquist in L&S Plaster and Stucco. Over forty years improving area resident’s houses meant that he was often recognized in public and would frequently recall people through the work he had performed in their homes. In 1977 he met and fell in love with Gail Riebe. They married December 29th, 1977 in a ceremony surrounded by their closest family and friends. They would have celebrated 42 years together in December. Duane’s love of nature led him to be an avid camper, hunter and fisherman. Summers spent at Lake Shetek, with his family and friends, will be fondly remembered by all who were there. He also enjoyed bowling and was a longtime participant in area bowling leagues. When at home, he enjoyed playing cards and was a fierce competitor in games of 500. Duane was an active member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church and a Knight of Columbus. Additionally, he was a valued member of the Eagles lodge in Marshall. He is survived by his loving wife of forty-one years Gail (Riebe) Sumerfelt, his son Michael (Theresa) Sumerfelt, daughter Shana (Lee) Allex, his grandchildren Cyrus and Samara Sumerfelt and Madelyn and Malia Allex, brothers David Sumerfelt of Spanaway, Washington, Daniel Sumerfelt of Sahuarita, Arizona and Dennis Sumerfelt of Wheaton, Minnesota as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents as well as brother Richard Sumerfelt. Duane will forever be remembered as a loving husband, caring (grand)parent and loyal friend.
