Dolores Jean Gertner

Services for Dolores Gertner, 86, of Winona, formerly of Westbrook, will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, October 3, 2016, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Westbrook. Visitation will be Sunday from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the Life Remembrance Center of Westbrook (formerly Almlie Horvath Funeral Home) and from 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. Monday at the church. Interment will follow the service at the Westbrook Cemetery. Dolores Jean (Ewy) Gertner was born on September 12, 1930, to Ewald and Agnes Ewy at home on the family farm. She attended District 105 Rural School in Murray County through 7th grade. She later graduated from Westbrook High School. Dolores went to Teacher’s Training School in Lamberton for one year. She taught in Shady Nook Rural School in Cottonwood County which included all eight grades for three years. After two years, she renewed her Teacher’s Certificate at Mankato State. On June 19, 1952, she was united in marriage to Vernon Gertner at Trinity Lutheran Church. After Vernon’s death in 1982, Dolores moved from the farm to Westbrook. She worked in the dietary departments at Westbrook Hospital and Good Samaritan Nursing Home. She also taught Sunday School, Bible School, was active in WELCA and Choir, was a 4-H leader and Piano Teacher. In 2010, she moved to Winona to live with her daughter, Colleen. Dolores loved babies and children. She stated that her fondest memories were when her children were young. She enjoyed cooking, baking, painting, ceramics at Doris Ewy’s, traveling with friends, especially a trip to Germany, vegetable and flower gardening and selling home interiors. Dolores died on Monday, September 26, 2016, at the Sauer Health Care Center in Winona. She is survived by her children Colleen (and Ray) Cenfield of Winona, Bradley (and Deb) Gertner of Westbrook, Bruce Gertner of Westbrook, Dineen (and Todd) Fischer of San Andreas, CA, Deanne (and Warren Wheeler) Gertner of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Douglas (and Lisa) Gertner of North Branch, MN, grandchildren Ana and Ellie Cenfield, Corey and Kyle Gertner, Andrew and Jennifer Schwanbeck, Isaac, Emelia and Melissa Fischer, Nick and Matt Gertner, 8 great-grandchildren, siblings Judy (and Ron) Schreier of Slayton, Sharon Gerhard of Mesa, AZ, sister-in-law Delores Ewy of Westbrook, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter Collette Schwanbeck, brother Donald Ewy and sisters LaVonne Layman and LaDonna Busswitz.
